“When it comes to an elegant ice design-The Sky is the limit!” Work on the multiblock sculptures progresses. Blocks piled on top of blocks. Blocks in the initial stages of carving. Scaffolding stretching to the “sky”. Paper patterns ironed to the front of blocks. All of these represent initial phases of what will be a finished masterpiece of ice, an elegant ice design. I walked by one site and all the blocks had pictures on them-paper patterns that are literally ironed to the front of the ice blocks to transfer the picture onto the ice. I passed another site that had a huge long nose lying on its end. Two enormous tusks had been carved. Then beside the tusks was a giant block of ice that had the word “ear” written on it. I concluded that all these pieces will turn into an elephant. One site had all its blocks fused together into a wall. One site had all its blocks on top of each other-literally a tower of ice. It’s fun to watch the metamorphosis from giant ice cubes to finished artistic sculptures of carved ice. What progress will we see by tomorrow? In the Badger Building at the Ice Park all the carvers have tables set out for their myriad of tools. In addition, they each have a long pipe that blows hot air that they use to dry out gloves. Once in a while you will witness a carver at dinner rubbing his/her shoulder and no one gets a lot of sleep. They will all have earned their seat in the hot tub when this is over. Ethereally, we all are so glad they love carving. We are the beneficiaries of the beautiful eye appealing treasures to come.
